FRANCISCO TOLEDO

Francisco Benjamín López Toledo es un pintor mexicano. Nace el 17 de julio de 1940 en Juchitán, Oaxaca. En los cincuentas, inicia sus estudios artísticos en la gráfica, en el taller de grabado de Arturo García Bustos. Posteriormente ingresa al Taller Libre de Grabado de la Escuela de Diseño y Artesanías, del Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes (INBA), en la ciudad de México. En 1959 exhibe sus obras en la Galería Antonio Souza y en el Fort Worth Center, en Texas.

Considerado uno de los mejores artistas vivientes de México, Francisco Toledo es inigualable. Es un experto impresor, dibujante, pintor, escultor y ceramista. Su arte y plástica refleja una gran apreciación por la estética de la naturaleza, particularmente la de animales que no son convencionalmente asociados con la belleza (murciélagos, iguanas, sapos, insectos). La visión moral de Toledo afirma que el mundo de los humanos y el de los animales son uno con la naturaleza. Toledo muestra un sentido de lo fantástico muy bien desarrollado al crear criaturas híbridas, parte humanas y parte animal, a la vez monstruosas y juguetonas, sus hermosos papalotes, libretas artesanales, máscaras, joyería e intrínsecos grabados son otra muestra de su genialidad.

El artista zapoteco se ha dedicado a promover y difundir la cultura y las artes de su estado natal, Oaxaca, donde actualmente reside. Con apoyo de otras instituciones funda en octubre de 1997 el Taller Arte Papel Oaxaca, instalado en la antigua planta hidroeléctrica "La Soledad". Dentro de este contexto, fundó Ediciones Toledo, que en 1983 publicó su primer libro, y en 1988 creó el Instituto de Artes Gráficas de Oaxaca (IAGO).

A iniciativa suya se abre el 20 de marzo del 2006 CASA (Centro de Artes de San Agustín) en Etla, Oaxaca en donde se estudia fotografía, gráfica digital, diseño textil, educación a distancia, la preservación del patrimonio y el arte, enfocados también al medio ambiente.

En 2005 recibe El Premio al Sustento Bien Ganado por dedicarse a la protección y mejora de la herencia, ambiente y vida de la comunidad de su natal Oaxaca. Hay obras suyas en los Museos de Arte Moderno de México, París, Nueva York y Filadelfia, en la New York Public Library, la Tate Gallery de Londres y la Kunstnaneshus de Oslo, entre otros. Ha ilustrado varios libros, y ha participado en numerosas exposiciones colectivas e individuales en ciudades como Nueva York, Londres, París, Ginebra, Oslo, entre otras.

Francisco Benjamin Lopez Toledo is a Mexican painter.  Born July 17, 1940 in Juchitan, Oaxaca. During the fifties, he initiates his artistic studies in graphics at the Arturo Garcia Bustos etching studio.  Later, he enters at “Taller Libre” for Engraving at the School for Design and Crafts at the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) in Mexico City.  In 1959 he exhibits his works at Galeria Antonio Souza and at the Fort Worth Center in Fort Worth, Texas. 

Considered one of the best living artists in Mexico, Francisco Toledo is unparalleled.  He is an expert printer, drawer, painter, sculptor and ceramist.  His art and plastics reflect an appreciation for the aesthetics of nature, particularly in animals that conventionally are not associated with beauty (bats, iguanas, frogs, insects).  Toledo's moral vision, affirms that the world of human beings and the world of animals are one in nature. Toledo shows a sense of the fantastic very well developed creating hybrid creatures, part human part animal, simultaneously monstrous and playful.  His beautiful kites, handcrafted notebooks, masks, jewelry and intrinsic etchings are another proof of his genius.

The Zapotecan artist has devoted himself to promoting and spreading the culture and the arts of his native state, Oaxaca, where he currently resides.  With the support of other institutions he establishes in October 1997 the “Taller Arte Papel Oaxaca” (Oaxaca Art Paper Sudio), located in the old hydroelectric plant "La Soledad" (The Solitude).  Within this context, he created Toledo Publications, which in 1983 publishes his first book and in 1988 creates the Oaxaca Gaphic Arts Institute (IAGO).

On his initiative, on March 20, 2006 CASA opens ( Centro de Artes de San Agustin) (San Agustin Arts Center) in Etla, Oaxaca offering photography, digital graphics, textile design, internet courses, preservation of the patrimony and the arts, also focusing on the environment. 

In 2005 he receives the Award for “ Sustento Bien Ganado” (Livelihood Well Earned) for devoting himself to the protection and improvement of the improvement of the legacy, the environment and community work in his native Oaxaca.  His works are housed in the Museums of Modern Art in Mexico, Paris, New York and Philadelphia, as well as in the New York Public Library, the Tate Gallery in London and Kunstnaneshus in Oslo, among others.
